A love forbidden by prejudice; a murder master mined because of unbridled hate; and a family history hidden for decades due to societal inequities are exposed when the old tattered black book is found.
The saga begins when Danny finds Charlotte Wickham’s diary and wedding photo glued to the bottom of one of her Aunt’s cabinet drawers. Danny is curious and asks her aunt about them. Auntie answers, “This book is the story of an Indian boy who dared to do what one Caucasian girl’s father deemed unforgivable.” She then starts telling Danny and her mother, Diana about a woman named Charlotte and lays bare Charlotte’s secret that she has kept for over 60 years.
Alternating between Charlotte’s story starting in 1883, and Auntie’s exposé in 1951, Auntie tells Danny and Diana the truth about Charlotte Wickham. Charlotte, the daughter of a prominent attorney, meets Tey Aihamson, a Lenape Indian in grade school in 1883. They fall in love. But Charlotte’s father, Tobias hates all Indians because his family was brutally slaughtered by renegades in his youth. Unbeknownst to Tobias Charlotte and Tey run off together setting off waves of heartbreak and death that follow Charlotte for years to come. And when the final chapter of Charlotte’s saga is told and all pieces are in place, Danny understands why Auntie has kept Charlotte Wickham’s secret all these years.
